Method of Teaching

The Farrar Vocal Studio features the ‘Bel Canto’ singing style. ‘Bel canto’ is Italian for ‘beautiful singing’. It emphasizes absolute breath control, vocal sheen, evenness of tone, agility, and elegance. ‘Bel canto’ is both a philosophy of singing style and a period of musical history between the late 1600s and 1740 that has become known as the ‘Golden Age of Song’.

When a tone is truly beautiful it shows that the vocal mechanism is functioning in the correct manner. ‘Bel Canto’ singing is distinguished by ease and flexibility of movement in singing, emotional expressiveness, resonant tones, and control over loud and soft passages.

Some well-known ‘Bel Canto’ composers were Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini and Puccini, as well as Mozart. Some characteristics of their vocal music are long, often florid phrases, both long, sustained legato phrases (sostenuto), and rapid passages requiring agility (fioritura).

Even if you do not have aspirations to be an opera singer, learning to sing with the ‘Bel Canto’ technique will enable you to have and keep a better singing voice for a much longer time, regardless of the style and genre of music you choose to sing.

A Message from Lee Farrar Bailey

I have had the privilege to be teaching voice to students for the past 15 years and many of my students have gone on to receive high scholarships and awards as well as transitioning into the professional music world.
I believe that there is room for all genres of music and I value the calling of the students. I train the singer to be technically sound with a voice that flows with freedom while being completely supported, thus finding the heart of the beauty of the voice.
Being a songwriter, composer and guitarist, I love working with all types of singers and if you’re looking for voice teacher or a vocal coach I would love to work with you.
